NBCR supports four Technology Research & Development cores:
- TR&D Core 1: Advancing Technologies for Atomic-to-subcellular Simulation and Discovery This core focuses on developing new software tools and simulation technologies that advance atomic-level investigations and forge new connections to subcellular levels of biological organization.
- TR&D Core 2: Tools to Assemble Virtual Whole Cells for Multi-scale, Multi-modal Simulations This core focuses on developing detailed structural models, based on challenges defined by driving biomedical projects, centering on the molecular underpinnings of cellular processes.
- TR&D Core 3: Multi-scale Modeling Environment for Subcellular-to-organ-system Biophysics This core is developing a multi-scale modeling environment for biomechanics, transport, and electrophysiology designed to allow users to author models that integrate from molecular to organ-system scales.
- TR&D Core 4: Practical Cyberinfrastructure for Multi-scale Refinement, Modeling, and Analysis Workflows This core focuses on developing workflow techniques, software integration processes, and big-data management capabilities, quantifying computational uncertainty (when multiple models are combined), and creating domain-specific user interfaces.
